Achievements

Achievements are goals that exist outside of the game and are tracked by the platform you play The End is Nigh on.

For the Steam version of the game there are a total of 106 achievements to unlock. 71 normal achievements and 35 hidden achievements. This page does not differentiate between the two types. All achievement descriptions here also contain accurate requirements instead of Steam's vague phrasing.

Play Station 4 version has most, but not all achievements that the Steam version offers.

The Nintendo Switch version does not have any achievements.

Story Achievements[ | ]

Story achievements are acquired by progressing through the game normally. Completing any given area only requires getting through it and reaching the first level of whichever area comes after it.

Completion Achievements[ | ]

Completion achievements are acquired by completing multiple other achievements, serving as "achievement milestones".

Note 1: Retro Rampage!, Retro God!, BEAT IT!, and DEAD GOD! track completion of goals within one save file. Completing the goals separately across multiple save files will not grant you those achievements.

Note 2: It has not been confirmed that in order to unlock the BEAT IT! achievement you actually have to initiate the ending cutscenes. Players pretty much always activate those cutscenes before completing the hardest cartridge goals.

Challenge Achievements[ | ]

Challenge achievements are specific goals that aren't indicated anywhere in normal gameplay. They generally require creating separate save files.

Note 1: Completing the game for LIVE FAST, DIE!, UNDYING!, and Iron God! means getting the Acceptance Ending. These can supposedly be achieved by getting the Nevermore Ending too, but there is no reason to do that, since that would be a lot more challenging.

Note 2: LIVE FAST, DIE!, UNDYING!, and Iron God! track completion by the timer and the amount of deaths displayed on the save file's card in the save file menu. Launching the game with the developer console enabled in the settings.txt file automatically adds 3 hours of playtime and 500 deaths to the save files you create.

Trivia[ | ]

The Streaming Mimi achievement name is a reference to Fredric Brown's novel "The Screaming Mimi" and the film based on it.
The "Iron God!" achievement didn't exist back when the game first came out. It was added when the player named Eenox completed the game deathless for the first time in its history. Video of that run can be found here.
Eenox would later go on to also get the Hoarder achievement without dying once, but that was too crazy of a feat to add a new achievement associated with it. Video of the run can be found here.
