The game is composed of many (600+) levels forming a complex interconnected world. Each level takes up one screen, meaning you see the whole level at once. When the player leaves the level, and returns to it, the level's state gets reset. For example, all moving objects will return to their starting positions. The states of collectibles get saved, so previously collected tumors, cartridges, keys, and Friend pieces will not reappear after being collected.

Levels are grouped into areas (or worlds), which are roughly 15-20 levels long. Each area is unique visually and focuses on its own set of mechanics.

Using the map menu, Ash can fast-travel between warps (described as an Arid Flats skull as "ancestors' guts"), which are placed at the start of each area.

There are "main path" levels, which are necessary to go through in order to reach the end of the area, and optional "secrets", connected to main path levels. Almost every area in the game has some amount of secret levels the player may discover.

Main path levels in the Past segment of the game contain regular tumors, while secrets often contain mega tumors and cartridges.

The Past[edit | edit source]

Full map of the Past

The Past is the first part of the game, portraying the events that happen between the game's intro and the moment Ash makes the Friend.

The End[edit | edit source]

The End's area label

The End is the game's very first area. It's a rainy, slowly collapsing city, where Ash resides after the apocalypse. Its starting level contains a warp, which is always unlocked on the map, Ash's gaming console which can be used to access collected game cartridges, and a stand with a hook, used for placing collected Friend parts and, eventually, activate the Future cutscene.

Above the starting level is an extra level The End 0, which doesn't count as a secret. In it Steven IV can be found.

The End's main path consists of 20 levels, not counting The End 0. 20 regular tumors can be gathered in this area.

The End contains 13 secret levels, in which 7 mega tumors and 1 game cartridge can be collected.

Secret Entrances[edit | edit source]

  • The End 3 (downwards secret) - 2 levels, 1 mega tumor, 1 NPC. Accessed by breaking the blocks in the building's roof next to the skull.
  • The End 6 (downwards secret) - 1 level, 1 mega tumor. Accessed by breaking the crumbling block under the left platform.
  • The End 8 (upwards secret) - 1 level, 1 mega tumor. Accessed by jumping onto the upper platform from the building in The End 9.
  • The End 12 (upwards secret) - 3 levels, 1 mega tumor. Accessed by climbing the wall of the rightmost building.
  • The End 13 (downwards secret) - 1 level, 1 mega tumor. Accessed by jumping into the small hole at the bottom of the level.
  • The End 13 (upwards secret) - 1 mega tumor, 1 NPC. The secret is split into two parts by a wall. Left part with the NPC is accessed by climbing into a small hole in the ceiling revealed by a falling block at the start of the level. Right part with the mega tumor is accessed by climbing into the large hole revealed when the central part of the building falls down.
  • The End 14 (downwards secret) - 2 levels, 1 mega tumor, 1 key. Accessed by unlocking the gate in the bottom part of the level.
  • The End 15 (upwards secret) - 2 levels, 1 cartridge, 1 NPC. Accessed by jumping on top of the rightmost building.

Arid Flats[edit | edit source]

Arid Flats' area label

Arid Flats is the game's second area. It's a large desert-like field with withered plants and surprisingly uneven terrain. The area is a home to kukos, slags, and toasts. It also introduces the player to springs. Some of the area's downwards secrets are partially flooded with clean water.

In level 5 of Arid Flats Steven I is hiding from the sun in a small cave.

Arid Flats' main path consists of 20 levels, in which 20 regular tumors can be gathered.

Arid Flats also contain 14 secret levels. In those Ash can collect 7 mega tumors and 1 cartridge.

  • Arid Flats 10 (upwards secret) - 2 levels, 1 mega tumor. Accessed by jumping to the right side of the level, waiting for a spring to float up from the bottom of the level, and using it to reach the cliff on the left.
