The End is Nigh is an action-adventure platformer developed by Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel. It features a large post-apocalyptic world, consisting of over 600 interconnected levels, split into areas.

The gameplay is focused on precision, planning, and exploration, but it also features some fast-paced sections. Any given level takes up the full screen, meaning the player can see all the obstacles at once and get an idea of how to get through them. The objective of every level is simple - run, jump, swim, and do whatever it takes to get to the next level. If you feel extra adventurous, you can collect various items of interest placed slightly out of the way, and explore levels for secrets!

Dying is a big part of the game, made less punishing by the instant respawn.

Story[ | ]

The world of The End is Nigh is bleak and lonely. Most living things on Earth have been wiped out by "some kind of apocalypse", leaving a small amount of half-alive blob-like creatures to roam the planet.

The player takes control of Ash, a black blob with one eye, who used to be a human before the apocalypse, and who's been staying at home playing video games on his console since the world ended. Once his last remaining game cartridge breaks, Ash finally decides to leave his house and go outside in hopes of making a friend.

Ash's dangerous adventure will take him through what remains of the world. Decaying cities, dark underground caves, tall mountains, absolute wonders of technology left behind by the now dead human civilization, and other strange places...

Platform differences[ | ]

The End is Nigh can be bought from four different official distributors and played on a variety of platforms, but be aware that not all versions of the game are made equal. See which qualities you are looking for in a game and make your decision accordingly.

Steam (Windows, macOS, Linux, Steam Deck)[ | ]

Steam version of The End is Nigh offers the full experience and more. This version features full quality of graphics, 106 unlockable achievements, and full access to modded content on the Steam Workshop. (Note: macOS version of the game is somewhat outdated and won't support most modern mods.)

Epic Games Store (Windows)[ | ]

Epic Games version of The End is Nigh isn't any different from Steam in terms of graphics, but it does lack achievements and does not offer a convenient way to install modded content. (Although it is still possible.)

Nintendo Store (Nintendo Switch)[ | ]

Nintendo Store version of the game offers a way to play The End is Nigh both at home and on-the-go with Nintendo's compact handheld console. However, it does not have achievements and makes installing modded content impossible. Some graphics effects may be toned down in this version for the sake of performance.

Play Station Store (Play Station 4)[ | ]

Play Station Store version of The End is Nigh is another console release. Much like the version sold for Nintendo Switch, it does not offer a way to install modded content. However, it does have most of the achievements Steam version has. Some graphics effects may be toned down in this version for the sake of performance.
