Golgotha is the second area on the lower path from The Split, accessed by reaching the bottom of The Hollows. It is a continuation of the cave system, consisting of volcanic caves partially flooded with lava, which serves as one of the area's main hazards. This area is significantly hotter and much more brightly illuminated, compared to The Hollows. Golgotha introduces three new enemies.

Golgotha's main path consists of 21 level. Main levels contain 20 regular tumors.

Golgotha contains 12 secret levels, in which 7 mega tumors and 1 cartridge (Dig Dead) can be collected.

Final level of Golgotha contains the body, which is one of the three body parts needed to assemble the Friend and complete the first part of the game. That level is a dead end and has a one-way warp in it, not marked on the map, which can be used to leave the area.

Enemies[ | ]

Golgotha houses 3 enemy types and one natural hazard, not counting lava:

Crunches - round and hostile creatures chained to solid blocks. They will remain near their chain hitch when undisturbed, breathing loudly. When Ash is in range, the crunch will charge towards him, as far as the chain's length allows. After an unsuccessful charge the crunch will stay in place for a bit, recovering, and either charge again if Ash is still around or slowly retreat back to the original position. Touching the crunch, even when it is not charging, kills Ash.
Musks - relatively large flying blobs, marked by a cross on their head. They behave similarly to crunches, but are not restricted by chains. After noticing Ash for the first time, the musk will start following him. When close enough to Ash, the musk will charge towards him with a loud growl. Touching the musk kills Ash. Musks fly over solid blocks, but can't see Ash through a solid wall initially.
Crushers (multi-directional) - solid blocks marked with decorative eyes, which attempt to crush Ash when he crosses their line of sight. After charging towards Ash and hitting a solid surface, the crusher will stop and prepare for another charge. This crusher type can charge in any of the four cardinal directions.
Fireballs - deadly objects that get launched out of lava pools at even intervals, following a set trajectory. Fireballs will bounce off of solid surfaces and will leave a trail of embers behind when moving. Touching a fireball will kill Ash.

Golgotha 4 (upwards secret) - 1 mega tumor. Accessed by climbing up through the hole in the ceiling left by the falling blocks.
Golgotha 5 (upwards secret) - 1 mega tumor. Accessed by pulling on the hook under the ceiling near the end of the level.
Golgotha 8 (upwards secret) - 1 mega tumor. Accessed by jumping onto the single falling block at the start of the level and pulling on the hook hidden behind the other group of falling blocks.
Golgotha 9 (upwards secret) - 1 mega tumor. Accessed by pulling on the hook above the level's exit.
Golgotha 11 (downwards secret) - 1 mega tumor, 1 NPC. Accessed by breaking through the breakable blocks in the floor in the middle of the level.
Golgotha 14 (upwards secret) - 1 mega tumor, 1 NPC. Accessed by pulling on the lowest hook on the right wall, then climbing up into the hole in the ceiling.
Golgotha 15 (right secret) - 1 mega tumor, 1 key. Accessed by opening the gate in the right wall with a key.
Golgotha 18 (left secret) - 1 cartridge, 1 NPC. Accessed by jumping into the small tunnel in the upper left.

Golgotha's music theme is a remix of Modest Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain.
Golgotha was the place where materials for bombs manufactured in The Machine were gathered, as stated by Tyler.
Golgotha, or Calvary, was the hill on which Jesus was crucified. The body on the sacrificial altar in the final level of the area somewhat ties into this theme.
The dialogue of the ghost below Golgotha 11 is a reference to the horror comedy film "Evil Dead II".
